Savage Deadlock Page 14
The flight back to Washington took him through the South Pacific on its circuitous route, and along the way he joined up with Davis and Yasmin. The physicist had little to say to him and spent most of the flight trying to pretend he wasn’t there. Davis, on the other hand, made a hesitant apology.
“I had you figured wrong. I had you down as a typical meathead company man.”
“Trusting me from the outset would have made things a whole lot easier,” Bolan said.
“Maybe. It wouldn’t have changed me screwing up, though,” she muttered. Bolan waited for her to explain. “I let that Taliban asshole broadside me out there. I came out of two tours unscathed, but because I was emotionally involved, I let my focus go west. I could have killed Shaz.”
“But you didn’t, Davis. We all make mistakes occasionally. Some of us are lucky enough to get past that, and if we do, we learn the lesson. So learn the lesson and watch her back while you’re working with her. That’s all you can do, right?”
Davis nodded thoughtfully, but doubt still flickered in her expression.
Bolan hoped she’d come to believe his words. A soldier could learn all there was to know about strategy and weapons and technique, but even after years of combat, sometimes the most important skill was admitting one’s own fallibility. Imperfection wasn’t something to be overcome, but embraced with a vow to do better. The PWLA knew this now, and it was something Bolan reminded himself of daily. Whatever mission came his way next, he’d do better. He had to.
